One Person Killed in a Multi-Vehicle Accident involving a Semi-truck on I-55 near Lorenzo Road in Will County, Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois — One Person died in a multi-vehicle crash involving two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles. The incident unfolded on Saturday morning on northbound Interstate 55 near Lorenzo Road.

Preliminary information suggests that traffic had slowed, and a semi-trailer was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision with the other vehicles in its path.

No further details have been provided.

Thoughts on semi-trucks involved in multi-vehicle accidents

Truck drivers bear the duty to navigate our roadways according to current traffic conditions. Strict adherence to safety rules, including maintaining a safe distance and adjusting driving behavior based on traffic conditions, is crucial for preventing accidents of this nature. Why was the truck driver in this incident unable to stop in time? The family of the deceased deserves to know.

When truckers follow the rules, rear-end collisions are almost always preventable. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recommends that trucks keep a seven to eight-second distance from the vehicle in front of them. Did the trucker follow those suggestions?

What about the trucking company’s role in this incident? Did they vet their drivers for repeated violations and adequately train them on safety procedures?

When a truck driver or a trucking company falls short of their responsibility, accountability is needed. Identifying wrongdoing and holding responsible parties accountable is the least that can be done for the surviving family.
