Worker Killed in Trench Accident in Orange County Tustin, California

Tustin, California – A man lost his life while working at an excavation site in Tustin on Wednesday. The incident unfolded in the 9800 block of Newport Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

Reports state the worker was working 15 feet underground when an object fell, fatally striking him on the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The nature of the fallen object has not been disclosed at this time.

Worksites need to ensure safety regulations are followed

According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the four leading causes of construction industry deaths include falls, struck-by, caught-in or between, and electrocutions, known as —The Fatal Four. Struck-by accidents involve falling objects like what seems to have happened in this incident.

The deceased’s family deserves to know why their loved one lost their life while working. Were there safety protocols in place at the job site? Was the deceased provided with safety gear, like a hard hat? Were tools and materials safely secured to prevent them from falling on people?

If an investigation reveals that the worksite compromised the safety of workers, employers need to answer to the deceased’s family and be held accountable for the wrongdoing discovered.
