Construction Worker Killed After Falling 20 Ft. into a Shaft in Orange County, Orlando, Florida

Orlando, Fla. –  A man died after falling 20 feet into a shaft at a construction site. The site is associated with a Florida Department of Transportation project near Palm and Central Florida parkways, located west of I-4.

According to reports, an object struck the worker, causing him to fall into the shaft.

The man succumbed to his injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified.

Thoughts on falling objects at construction sites

Working in construction is dangerous. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more construction workers died on the job in 2022 than in any other industry sector. More must be done to protect our workers. This fatal accident leaves us concerned. Did the employers do all they could to prevent this death?

Employers can reduce the occurrence of fatal accidents by implementing safety guidelines. For example, OSHA mandates securing all tools and materials in work environments where falling objects pose a risk to workers. Was this enforced at the construction site? Were there screens, guardrails, catch platforms, canopies, and debris nets to reduce the probability of this incident? Were the workers well-trained on safety procedures?

Answers to these questions will shed light on any potential wrongdoing or negligence that may have contributed to this accident. If wrongdoing is discovered, those responsible must be held accountable for not taking the necessary steps to protect their workers.

This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts go out to the deceased’s family, who have to live with the loss of their loved one.
