Jordan Collier Killed in an Accident with a Parked Semi-truck on Interstate 44 in Lawrence County, Missouri

Lawrence County, Mo. – A man died in a collision with a parked semi-truck. The incident happened at 1 am on Sunday.

According to reports, Jordan Collier was driving his Kia Forte onto the I-44 exit ramp at Halltown when he collided with the back of a semi-truck parked on the shoulder of the interstate near the beginning of the exit ramp.

Collier was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details have been provided.

Thoughts on fatal collisions with parked semi-trucks

The shoulder is never a safe spot for a semi-truck to park. Too many motorists have lost their lives colliding with stalled or parked commercial trucks. Our roadways are not parking spaces and truckers cannot continue to use them as such.

Regulations from The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) require that commercial trucks only park on the side of the highway in emergencies; however, this protocol is not always adhered to. It is clear in this case that had the truck not been parked on the side of the road, Mr. Collier would not have died.

We are handling a similar case involving a young husband and father who crashed into the back of a truck that was parked on the left shoulder of a major freeway. When we deposed the driver of the truck, he said he pulled over to use the bathroom. Instead of stopping at a rest stop that was designed, the trucker chose to park next to a moving lane of traffic. This decision left a man dead, a woman a widow, and a child fatherless. It is actions such as this that must be stopped.

Without further investigation, it is difficult to determine why this trucker was parked on the side of the road. There may have been a legitimate reason. However, if the truck driver improperly parked a full-sized semi-truck next to a moving lane of traffic, they need to be held accountable for breaking the law and all the consequences that have resulted from that decision.
