One Person Killed and Another Severely Injured on Route 78, Oceanside, California After a Car Crashed into a Parked Excavator

Oceanside, Calif. —  One person died, and another was severely injured when a car crashed into an excavator parked near the shoulder of the highway. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon on State Route 78 on the eastbound lanes near El Camino Real.

According to the California Highway Patrol, both occupants of the vehicle were trapped inside following the crash. First responders worked diligently to extract the trapped individuals from the car.

Once freed, emergency personnel transported both occupants to a nearby trauma center where, en route, one passenger suffered cardiac arrest. The second passenger remains in critical condition.

The identities of the victims have not been disclosed.
