Two People Rescued  After Becoming Trapped in 10-Foot Trench at the 7100 block of Buffalo Speedway in Houston, Texas

Houston, Texas—Firefighters rescued two individuals trapped in a 10-foot trench Thursday afternoon between two apartment buildings at the Camden Vanderbilt, located in the 7100 block of Buffalo Speedway.

Approximately 41 members of HFD responded to the emergency. HFD extracted both individuals from the trench, and one person was transported to the hospital; their condition remains unknown.

Details regarding the circumstances leading to the individuals’ entrapment remain unclear, including whether they were engaged in work-related activities at the time of the incident.

OSHA was present to investigate the incident.

Thoughts on trench-related accidents

According to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), a trench greater than 4 feet must have a ladder that extends at least 3 feet for easy exit access. The trench in this incident was 10 feet and there is no mention of a ladder or any other equipment nearby that would have helped prevent this accident. Were safety protocols in place at this construction site?

Only a thorough investigation can determine if this accident could have been avoided. May any wrongdoing come to light and those injured receive the justice and compensation they deserve.
