A Man Dies After a Semi-truck Blocks Lane on US 30 in Porter County, Indiana

Porter County, Indiana — A man lost his life when the Chevrolet SUV he was traveling in collided with a semi-truck. The incident happened Monday morning on US 30 near the Lake County line.

According to reports,  the SUV was traveling eastbound when a semi-truck, exiting a business, was making a westbound turn and obstructed the SUV driver’s eastbound lane while attempting to turn.

The SUV driver died at the scene of the accident.

No further details have been released.

Thoughts on semi-trucks obstructing lanes while turning

Driving a larger-sized vehicle on the road comes with responsibility. Truck drivers must constantly remind themselves of the damage they can instill on smaller passenger vehicles in the event of a collision due to their massive size. This is why following basic safety rules such as watching for other vehicles, taking their time before turning, and waiting for a safe break in traffic before proceeding are essential in keeping everyone on the road safe.

Due to commercial trucks’ considerable size and weight, they often require wide and slow turns, sometimes occupying more than one lane in the process. In this incident,  did the trucker take extreme caution when turning, following basic traffic laws? Did they have to yield and fail to? The trucker should be held accountable for this horrific crash if they failed to practice safety measures.

An investigation into the collision by trained professionals will determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine accountability. If it is found that the truck driver neglected safety protocols or acted negligently, they may be held responsible for their role.
