One Worker Seriously Injured After Falling 7 Stories at Bowline Power Plant,  in West Haverstraw, NY

Westchester County, New York —  A construction worker was seriously injured after falling seven stories from a facility. The incident occurred at the Bowline Power Plant in West Haverstraw around 5 a.m.

According to reports, the worker fell from scaffolding into a hopper, a large tube integral to the plant’s ductwork and boiler system.

Rescue crews had to breach the tube through insulation, sheet metal, and steel layers to reach the injured worker.

The rescue team had the injured worker airlifted to the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Reports state the injured worker was not wearing a harness, though it was reportedly not mandated for the type of scaffolding used.

Thoughts on workplace injuries

The more dangerous the job, the more safety precautions should be in place. Why was this worker at the plant not wearing a harness? Even if not mandated by law, employers should mandate their workers always to practice extreme caution to avoid serious injury.

The absence of appropriate safety equipment here (such as harnesses) raises concerns about the company’s safety regulations. While it’s reported that harnesses may not have been mandated for the specific scaffolding in use, this accident may call for a reassessment of the safety rules and protocols and whether the company needs more stringent regulations to protect workers from future harm.

When someone is severely hurt while doing their job, questions arise: Was the worker adequately trained regarding safety protocols in place? Were proper inspections conducted prior to the work task to identify potential hazards? These questions demand a thorough investigation to provide the injured justice for any company errors that may have caused him harm.

May the injured receive the answers they deserve and compensation if the workplace compromised his safety and shared fault in this terrible accident.
