Firestone Tire Recalls & Defects

Firestone (owned by Bridgestone) recalled approximately 6.5 million tires in early August 2000 after certain tires were connected with 46 fatal road accidents and at least 80 injuries. The tires produced were mostly outfitted on sport utility vehicles and light trucks, with the majority of complaints involving Ford vehicles.

The tires were recalled because they were said to “peel like a banana.” Many of the complaints stated that the Firestone tire treads peeled off their casings, sometimes while a vehicle was traveling at highway speeds. Several of the complaints originated from consumers in warmer climates, where high temperatures can affect a tire’s internal bonding and can result in tread separation.

Vehicles Equipped with the Affected Tires

While the tires were available for commercial sale, the following vehicles were originally equipped with the tires:

  • Ford Ranger
  • Ford F-150 pickup
  • Ford Explorer
  • Mazda Navajo
  • Mazda B-series pickup
  • Mercury Mountaineer

The Firestone recall affected the following tires:

  • Firestone radial ATX P235/75R15 (produced in North America)
  • Firestone radial ATXII P235/75R15 (produced in North America)
  • Firestone Wilderness AT P235/75R15 (produced at the Decatur, Illinois plant)
